There are plenty of reasons you may want to change your buddy in Pokemon Go, such as getting enough candy to evolve or even meeting evolution requirements as Feebas has. You may even want to show off a new Shiny Pokemon or even just an ultra-rare find. No matter the reason, you’ll need to know how to change your buddy at some point or another in your Pokemon Go journey.
Steps to Changing Your Buddy in Pokemon Go
Luckily, you can change your buddy in Pokemon Go in three quick and easy steps.

Step 1: Tap Your Profile
In the bottom right part of your phone screen, you’ll see your avatar’s head along with a small picture of your current buddy. When you tap that, you’ll be able to do a few things: change your style, see your badges, swipe and view friends, and even see personal stats like how many Pokemon you’ve ever caught in the mobile game.
You’ll also see your buddy Pokemon beside your avatar.

Step 2: Tap on Your Buddy
The first thing you’ll want to do is tap on your buddy Pokemon. This will bring up a few different options and stats. For example, you can play with your buddy and feed them treats in the AR mode with the green Play button. You can also see how many times you’ve played with your buddy, battled together, and a few other things in the stats area. This records the stats of everything from the current day as well as the total stats.
From there, you can scroll down to see a few other options, including a Swap Buddy button.

Step 3: Tap Swap Buddies
Once you’ve scrolled down, you’ll see a white and blue Swap Buddies button. Tap that, and you’ll be asked to confirm that you want to swap your buddy out. You can only do this 20 times a day – a fairly large number, but it limits cheaters from being able to hack the game and abuse the buddy system to get free candy and therefore higher CP Pokemon.
Then, all you have to do is choose the buddy that you wish to use!

An Alternate Way to Change Your Buddy in Pokemon Go
There’s not one method to changing your buddy in Pokemon Go. In fact, you can find another easy way to do so from the screen in step 1. Once you’ve clicked on your avatar, you’ll see a green circle with the words Buddy History under it.
Tap that, and you can scroll down and find the Swap Buddy button again. Tap it and you’ll be able to swap your buddy Pokemon with any other Pokemon you have.
How Not to Change Your Buddy
The one way that you can’t change your buddy in Pokemon Go is through the actual Pokemon screen itself. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t let you view a Pokemon you have and then try to make it your buddy. You have to go through the buddy options through the avatar menu.
